Celestino Mauricio Soto Jr. Parents are required to go with students to the first meeting, during which at least two people from the community, including a volunteer and a case manager, listen to why students have been missing school and then come up with a plan to work on the problem, Davila said. Students receive tutoring and perform community service and must check in weekly at the conference centers for a month, said Lilye Waters, a case manager at the Taylor Neighborhood Conference Committee Center.

Waters said she comes up with action plans for students, which can include research assignments into colleges or future jobs. This year, the conference committees have handled students in the Round Rock school district, 50 students in the Taylor district and 20 students in the Georgetown district, according to Davila and Waters. Richard Kolek, the principal of Taylor Middle School, said the school has referred 43 students to the program since it began in Taylor last year.
